Participants under the age of 15

Participation Requirements

It is possible for children under the age of 15 to participate in TrygFonden Christiansborg Rundt.

It is possible to swim alone or together with an adult companion.

A participant who is 15 years old or younger must:

  • Swim in a wetsuit
  • Swim with a tow float
  • Be a competent swimmer who is comfortable swimming at least 1000m without a break in a pool

It is no longer a requirement to complete and return a consent form. Instead, confirmation of the child’s participation must be made during the registration process on Sportstiming.

Participation is the responsibility of the parents or guardians.

Talk to Your Child About Participation

When you have participants under the age of 15, it is important to consider and discuss situations that may arise during an open-water event with many participants.

  • Before starting the swim, participants must go through registration and wait in the holding areas with their heat until it is their start time.
  • The start of the heat can be confusing, as many swimmers start simultaneously in a limited space. This can result in confusion and a lot of splashing. It may be helpful to start after most of the heat has begun or at the outer edge of the starting pontoon.
  • Swimmers are often surprised by the water temperature, which is colder than the indoor pool temperature they are accustomed to. Before the start signal, participants can enter the water to get used to the temperature. It is recommended to practice swimming in open water a few times before the event to experience the temperature difference and how a wetsuit affects mobility and buoyancy.
  • Visibility underwater is also more limited compared to indoor swimming, and on most of the route, it is not possible to see (or touch) the seabed.
  • Additionally, much of the natural light disappears when swimming under the many bridges surrounding Christiansborg. Especially during the Swim By Night event, it can feel dark and unsettling in the long tunnels.
  • If a swimmer feels uncomfortable, they can always signal for help and take a break at the lifeguards and supervisors stationed along the route. These individuals are easily recognizable by their neon vests or lifeguard uniforms. If a lifeguard or supervisor is not immediately visible, they may be located behind other swimmers. Raise an arm and signal for help, and someone will be there shortly.
  • After finishing the swim, many things happen in the finish area. Participants have their timing chip removed, receive a completion medal, are given snacks, fruit, and water, and can collect their stored bag of clothes before leaving the finish area and rejoining others outside on the plaza.

We hope the above information helps enhance both your and your child’s experience of participating in TrygFonden Christiansborg Rundt.
