A Record Number of Swimmers Dive in to Copenhagen’s Canals Over Two Days
This weekend, more than 4,500 swimmers will dive into the canal – and on Friday evening, we’ll light up Copenhagen with glowing swim buoys at twilight.
A record number of people jumped into Copenhagen's canals for Denmark's largest open-water event, which took place over two days.
With the largest number of participants ever and a record turnout across all distances, SvømDanmark opened Copenhagen’s canals this weekend to more than 4,600 enthusiastic swimmers.
“The Copenhagen Swim is open-water swimming at its best. Water acts as a magnet for life, joy, and community, and we see this come to life when so many swim around Christiansborg,” says Pia Johansen, chair of SvømDanmark.
This is the third consecutive year the event has taken place over two days.
“It’s absolutely fantastic to see the support from everyone who wants to participate in our many different distances. The weather and the water have been amazing, and the participants are happy and having a great time – this is community at its best,” says Pia Johansen, chair of SvømDanmark.
On Friday evening, more than 550 swimmers took to the water at twilight, equipped with glowing swim buoys, for the sold-out TrygFonden Copenhagen Swim by night.
“You start in the light and swim into the darkness. Like living candles, swimming lanterns, you will illuminate the city from the water. The local fish will wonder about you ‘glowing fish,’ and all of us spectators will watch in awe as you turn the canals into a shining example of what clean water and canals mean to Copenhagen,” said Pia Johansen before the first by night heat set off.
The distance is particularly popular among our international guests. In addition to the Danes, many participants from across Europe and the United Kingdom signed up, joined by swimmers from Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, China, and Canada.
“We are proud that our event helps put Denmark on the world map when it comes to open-water swimming. It’s amazing that this can happen here in Copenhagen. This is how it should be in all European cities – where people can jump into the water and experience the joy of life and a sense of community through their connection with the water,” says Pia Johansen, adding:
“So dear politicians at Christiansborg: I hope you share Aquatics Denmark’s vision of a clean and healthy sea. A place for all of us.”
An event like the TrygFonden Copenhagen Swim couldn’t take place without the more than 150 volunteers who tirelessly help before, during, and after the event. Similarly, we couldn’t swim around Christiansborg without the support of our sponsors. Each one of them plays a role in elevating our event.
We also owe a big thanks to the City of Copenhagen and By & Havn for supporting the TrygFonden Copenhagen Swim.
